My Top Pick for a Garbage Disposal Unit
I really enjoy what I do for a living, but when I get the chance to get a day or two off the shop floor it’s a welcome change. On this occasion, it was an annual trade show where I get the chance to meet up with other people that are interested in the same things professionally as me.
Mostly, I like to look at what types of new kitchen designs have appeared on the market over the last 12 months, but for some reason this time I took an interest in garbage disposals. I wasn’t really after finding out all the technical details but I like to know what they can do and how, so I have an idea of what I’m talking about when customers ask.
The InSinkErator Evolution Excel
On the first day I came across a stand that was promoting the InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0 HP, which is designed specifically for households. I have to say, it’s a shame this unit is hidden under your sink once it’s installed because it looks really nice. That may sound a little cheesy, but what can I say? I’m a sucker for chrome or silver.
For most of you reading this, you won’t be interested in what color it is, you’ll want to know what makes it stand out from the crowd. So here it goes..
Three Stage Grinding
Aside from looks, the first thing that attracted me was the grinding system. Because unlike most other models I’ve come across, the InSinkerator Evolution Excel actually uses 3 stages for grinding.
I’m pretty sure this will put a stop to the annoyance people have with garbage disposers. I’ve heard so many complaints from customers who are changing their waste disposals because they can’t handle the amount of waste that’s put into them. (Although for some customers of course, I have to bite my tongue when I find out they actually jammed the whole unit because a table-knife went missing…)
You can put pretty much any type of waste down this one (except knives). Even if you have meat with bones in it or vegetables that can clog the parts up, this garbage disposer will deal with it all.
Sound Reducing Technology
This is the next biggest complaint I come across. People may have a unit that still works, but they just can’t stand the amount of noise it makes anymore.
This one uses something called a quiet sink collar baffle. Sorry, but that’s the extent of my technical knowledge as far as that one goes, but what I can say is this baffle along with the SoundSeal Plus system really does work. I know this because I saw a demonstration with my own eyes (and ears). In fact, it was hard to tell the thing was actually running until all the bits in the bottom of the sink instantly disappeared without a trace.
Of course the manufacturer (and salesman on the stand) explained this model is highly eco-friendly and comes with a 7 year in-home warranty. This surprised me because many other models have far less than this, so that was a plus for me too.

I have to admit this garbage disposal is a little pricey though, so if something around $300 is over your budget, I would advise you the next best InSinkErator: the Evolution Essential. It will save you about $100 but you would still have a very good garbage disposer!
